Accountability

Accountability

Accountable_Two-MenAccountability is one of the most critical factors in successfully overcoming your struggle with porn or sex addiction.  It’s important to recognize upfront that accountability is not about having someone who will make you feel guilty when you make mistakes.  Accountability is focused on a relationship with someone who can maturely encourage you through the highs and lows of your porn or sex addiction.  It is also about learning to feel comfortable in honestly sharing about your struggle with someone you can trust.

When dealing with porn and sexual addiction, accountability can come in several forms, including computer software, support groups, professional counseling, and close friends and family.

Computer Software

Regardless of the type of porn or sex addiction you are struggling with, there is a high probability that your use of the Internet contributes to the issue.  If you don’t have someone holding you accountable with your use of the Internet, it’s still too easy to secretly continue the activities you know need to stop.  There are a variety of software programs  to monitor your activity on the Internet and  provide a report of that activity to your accountability partner.  Your accountability partner can then see if you’ve been visiting any questionable websites and encourage you appropriately.

Using accountability software is one of the most simple, yet effective, steps towards overcoming your porn or sex addiction.  Today is the day you need to choose to prevent the Internet from continuing its stronghold on your life.  If you don’t know anyone that can be an accountability partner, reach out to someone on the community.  In the Groups section, there are specific groups for men or women seeking accountability.

Support Groups

Support groups are an excellent way to grow in your recovery process from porn or sex addiction. In addition to learning from others with similar addictions, the leaders of support groups often have deep personal or professional experience to offer the group.  Because many groups are free or only accept donations, they can be a very cost-efficient way of receiving help.

Professional Counseling

One of the best ways to receive help is to regularly meet with a professional counselor or psychiatrist who specializes in the areas of porn and sex addiction. Counseling is particularly critical when you initially begin to address your addiction.  A counselor can also serve as an accountability partner because they are someone you’ll meet with on a regular basis.
